Sheltersafe.ca and Central Alberta Women's Emergency Shelter - Lifelines to safety for abused women and their children

Central Alberta Women's Emergency Shelter celebrates today’s launch of the new Sheltersafe.ca online resource to help women seeking safety from abuse.

With the launch of Sheltersafe.ca, women and children across the country will have a one-stop connection to help in their community. Any time of day or night women can find local support through Sheltersafe.ca.  The new site provides a single point of information for women seeking safety by quickly identifying a shelter within a geographic region. The map provides telephone numbers and websites, while protecting the confidential locations of shelters.  Sheltersafe.ca also underlines that women do not need to reside in a shelter resident in order to access shelter services, because in addition to being a safe place to stay, many shelters offer telephone support, counselling and safety planning for women in crisis.  Sheltersafe.ca quickly points concerned family, friends and neighbours to someone they can talk to about suspected abuse of a loved one.

“Isolation is the typical experience for victims of domestic violence.  The Sheltersafe.ca 'map' provides women facing abuse and violence with hundreds of points of light, of hope, and a useful tool to gain access to the help they need, wherever they are, in communities large and small. It is a reminder that you are not alone, and that regardless of where you live, domestic violence exists and you have access to resources that can help” said Ian Wheeliker, Executive Director of CAWES.

Central Alberta Women's Emergency Shelter is a founding participant in the Sheltersafe.ca initiative and can be found by zooming into the Red Deer region on the map of Canada.

The donation of gift cards this holiday season will give women the opportunity to personally shop for Christmas gifts for their children. This simple act will give our clients a sense of normalcy and empowerment during the holiday season. Gift Cards to shopping malls, department stores, and big box stores provide lots of choice for gift buying.

Ensure that every woman and child staying at the shelter this Christmas will enjoy something special under the tree December 25th. Show you care with the donation of new gift, toys, treats and gift cards.

At CAWES, we are fortunate to see firsthand the generosity that defines the season...husbands and wives, children, co-workers, and employers...all coming together to ensure that those less fortunate are able to celebrate the holidays with joy and hope with supportive people around them. Every year, we are reminded again and again of the strength this support lends to the women and children at the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter.
